Privacy policy
NoHungryPets is a small, free, single-maintainer project. This page explains what information we collect, why, and who else sees it โ in plain language, not legalese.
What we collect
- When you create an account: your first name, email address, and postcode.
- When you post a listing: the item details you enter (name, category, description, animal type) and any photos you upload.
- When you message another user: the content of those messages, visible only to you and the person you're messaging.
- If you email us directly: your email address and whatever you include in your message.
Your postcode is only ever used to show approximate distance and location on the map (down to postcode-area level) โ your exact address is never required or stored.
Third-party services we use
As a free, no-budget project, we run on other companies' free tiers rather than our own servers. Each of these can see the data needed to do their specific job:
- Firebase (Google) โ hosts our sign-in, database (listings, profiles, messages), and vanity traffic statistics (Google Analytics). Google's own privacy policy applies to their side of this.
- Firebase App Check / reCAPTCHA (Google) โ runs quietly in the background to confirm requests are coming from a real browser, not a bot or script.
- Cloudinary โ hosts photos you upload with a listing.
- postcodes.io โ a free, open UK postcode-lookup service; the postcode/town you enter (e.g. when searching the map) is sent to them to get map coordinates back.
- GitHub Pages โ hosts this website itself.
Some pages also link out to Google Maps, PayPal, and our Facebook Page โ once you click through, you're on their site under their own privacy policy, not ours.
Cookies & local storage
- Strictly necessary: used to keep you signed in and remember basic preferences (like whether you've dismissed the install banner). These are essential for the site to function and don't require consent.
- Analytics: Google Analytics (via Firebase) helps us understand how many people visit and roughly how they use the site. This is not strictly necessary and only runs with your consent โ see the cookie banner shown on your first visit.
What we don't do
- We never sell your personal data.
- We don't add any tracking beyond what's listed above.
Deleting your data
Email us and we'll delete your account and associated data. We don't currently have a fully automated self-service delete button โ for a project this size, a quick email gets it done just as fast and lets us make sure it's really you asking.
